The Story
Retractable Roof and Window System at Carolina Ale House Project #4833: LM Restaurants, Inc. manages a family of restaurants including Bluewater Waterfront Grill, Hops Supply Co. American Gastropub, Taverna Agora Greek Restaurant and Bar, Oceanic Oceanfront Dining, Eddie Romanelli’s, Henry’s and the star of this show…Carolina Ale House. The common denominator is a staff of employees who have a passion for creating and serving amazing food in warm and welcoming places.
Requirements
Natural light, unobstructed views, and fresh air were on the menu for this adaptive reuse project in keeping with the Carolina Ale House architectural vision of LM Restaurants and Architect, Frank Smith of Smith 2 Architecture + Design. Of course with intended exposure to the outdoors it was important to protect patrons and the restaurant operations from sunlight and the elements. The walls were originally specified as garage doors, following suit with the indoor/outdoor dining trend sweeping the country.

There are three adjustable, motorized, moving parts: Roof, Wall, and Screens. Each component can be adjusted to provide the perfect combination of fresh air, sunlight, sound control and protection from the elements. For most of the originally specified garage doors, the innovative Panora – View Retractable Window system was used instead. Whereas garage doors would require an additional railing to be installed, the Panora – View retractable wall lowers down to a glass wall. The downward retracting window also provides a less obstructed view when closed as well as the desired window opening. The retractable roof and window system works so well together!

- Frame: Custom color powder coated aluminum per spec AAMA 2604

- Design: 3-panel Panora – View retractable windows in sizes 9’x9’ and 13’x9’
- Retraction: ⅔ opening top down to a fixed panel glass wall
- Operation: Motorized with wall mounted momentary switch for adjustable open/close
- Glazing: ⅝” thick laminated glass
- Frame: Powder coated, thermally broken aluminum profile

- Design: Stoett Panorama Screen
- Retraction: 100%
- Operation: Motorized
- Glazing: 90% black solar mesh
- Frame: 6” housing with powder coated aluminum track and framing
